Entgegen dem Konsens der germanistischen Forschung ist der Name Wieland samt dem Wissen um Wielands Schmiedestatus nicht erst durch die Normannen, sondern durch die Franken und/oder Burgunder nach Frankreich gebracht worden, und zwar ausschliesslich in der Form Waland, die auch vom eddischen (und spateren islandischen) Volund vorausgesetzt wird. Dieses uberraschende Faktum zwingt zum Neudurchdenken der gesamten Fruhgeschichte der Gestalt einschliesslich der Struktur des Wielandmythos.
