Der unter Kaiser Tiberius gestorbene Gelehrte Marcus Verrius Flaccus verfasste neben anderen Werken die Schrift De significatu verborum. In diesem umfangreichen enzyklopadischen Lexikon werden seltene, meist altertumliche Woerter von einem grammatikalischen, antiquarischen und etymologischen Standpunkt aus erklart sowie durch viele Belegzitate - vorwiegend aus der fruhlateinischen Dichtung - illustriert. Die Kenntnis dieses Werkes - das uns nicht direkt uberliefert wurde - verdanken wir hauptsachlich dem luckenhaft erhaltenen Auszug des Sextus Pompeius Festus (2. Jahrhundert n.Chr.) sowie der abermaligen Epitomierung des Festus durch Paulus Diaconus (8. Jahrhundert n.Chr.). Hier liegt der erste moderne (Teil-)Kommentar zu beiden Epitomai vor.
