Aufgrund der physikalischen Eigenschaften von Helium sinken Atemwegswiderstand und damit der Beatmungsdruck. Patienten, die unter einer kritischen Erhohung des Atemwegswiderstandes leiden, konnen damit besser ventiliert werden. Dem pulmonalen Barotrauma wird vorgebeugt und die Weaningphase kann gunstig beeinflusst werden.
