Gegenstand des Buches ist das Phanomen der erlernten Hilflosigkeit. Neben dem lange Zeit vorherrschenden motivationstheoretischen Erklarungsansatz wird insbesondere die handlungstheoretische Interpretation durch Kuhl erortert. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen die vorauslaufenden Bedingungen erlernter Hilflosigkeit und deren Auswirkungen auf die Leistung. Dabei werden vor allem eigene experimentelle Untersuchungen und ihre Implikationen fur die Theorie dargestellt. Dies fuhrt zu einem Erklarungsansatz, der die beiden scheinbar konkurrierenden Interpretationen integriert und zu einem besseren Verstandnis des Phanomens der erlernten Hilflosigkeit beitragt.
