Vilfredo Paretos allgemeine Soziologie kann als Transformation philosophischer Standpunkte in eine soziologische Handlungs- und Ordnungstheorie verstanden werden. Zum einen stellt sich seine Handlungstheorie als materiale Transformation seines philosophischen Positivismus dar, enthalt dabei aber eine verstehende Komponente. Formal bestimmt ist seine Handlungs- und Ordnungstheorie hingegen durch einen dialektischen Essentialismus, der mit den positivistischen Theorieanteilen in ein Spannungsverhaltnis gerat. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird der theoriegeschichtlich unterschatzte Ansatz Paretos rekonstruiert und kausal durchsichtig gemacht.
