English description: Forced exile is considered a form of punishment typical for Imperial Rome. Thus far, however, few investigations have been made into the motives of the emperor and other judges, who had to decide the geographical aspect of the punishment. Frank Stini sheds light on the criteria applied to the choice of an exile location, as well as other previously neglected aspects of this rather flexibly applied punishment. His research is based on a catalogue of around 250 identified exiles whose cases were documented. German text.
German description: Das Zwangsexil gilt als eine typisch kaiserzeitliche Strafform. Jedoch wurde bisher nur selten nach den Motiven des Kaisers und der anderen Richter gefragt, die bei der Strafbemessung ueber den geographischen Aspekt einer Exilstrafe zu entscheiden hatten. Frank Stini durchleuchtet die Kriterien fuer die Auswahl eines Exilorts und andere, bislang vernachlassigte Aspekte dieser flexibel anwendbaren Strafe. Grundlage der Untersuchungen ist ein Katalog kaiserzeitlicher Exulanten, fuer den rund 250 namentlich bekannte Falle ermittelt und dokumentiert wurden.
