English summary: A famous exhibit at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, F. Kaufmann’s Trumpeter Machine (Dresden, 1810/12), is the starting point of this volume. Throughout the 19th Century this musical android fascinated a broad audience through exhibitions and concert tours, and stimulated composers and critics alike to comment on its craft. Their spectrum of comparison ranged from human virtuosity, to E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tales, to the field of traveling science. At the center of this study is the reception of such types of instruments as musical instruments, mechanical humans, and acoustic experiments, which leads to the central issues of storage, reproduction, and transformation of an event of this performance character. Rebecca Wolf illuminates the object from a music theory, but also a science and technology historical perspective, while also including philosophical, aesthetic, theater studies, and economic aspects. German description: Ein beruehmtes Exponat des Deutschen Museums in Muenchen bildet den Ausgangspunkt des Bandes: F. Kaufmanns Trompeterautomat (Dresden, 1810/12). Dieser Musikandroid faszinierte das 19. Jahrhundert hindurch in Ausstellungen sowie auf Konzertreisen ein breites Publikum und animierte Komponisten wie Kritiker zu zahlreichen ueberlieferten Ausserungen. Das Spektrum der Vergleiche reichte dabei vom menschlichen Virtuosentum ueber E.T.A. Hoffmanns Erzahlungen bis zum Feld der reisenden Wissenschaft.Im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung steht die Rezeption solcher Instrumententypen als Musikinstrument, Maschinenmensch und akustisches Experiment, was zu zentralen Fragen der Speicherung, Reproduktion und Transformation eines Geschehens mit Auffuehrungscharakter fuehrt. Rebecca Wolf beleuchtet das Objekt aus musiktheoretischer ebenso wie aus wissenschafts- und technikgeschichtlicher Perspektive und bezieht auch philosophisch-asthetische, theaterwissenschaftliche sowie okonomische Aspekte mit ein.Die Arbeit wurde mit dem aAward of Excellence des osterreichischen Bundesministeriums fuer Wissenschaft und Forschung ausgezeichnet.
