Christianity and slavery had an uneasy coexistence in the latter years of the Roman empire. This detailed study focuses on the contrasting attitudes of three bishops from 4th- and 5th-century Cappadocia towards slavery. Following a discussion of the politics, administration and slaves of the Roman province of Cappadocia, Klein examines the social background of Basilius of Caesarea, Gregor of Nazianz and Gregor of Nyssa and discusses the personal and professional attitudes of each in turn.
