Die Fruhe Neuzeit kannte eine Vielzahl von Diskursen, Performanzen und Reprasentationen, die auf eine UEberhoehung des Monarchen abzielten, ohne sich jedoch zu einer koharenten Gesamtheit zusammenzufugen. Ist das umfassende Forschungskonzept Absolutismus diesem heterogenen Befund angemessen? Die Beitrage gehen dieser Frage im Wesentlichen anhand von franzoesischen Beispielen nach. Sie sehen Absolutismus dabei im Sinne neuerer kulturhistorischer Ansatze nicht als objektive Gegebenheit oder real existierende gesellschaftliche Struktur, sondern als fruhneuzeitliche Konstruktion, als sozial und kulturell konstruierte Vorstellungswelt, in der Einflussmoeglichkeiten und Herrschaftsanspruche zu allererst symbolisch reprasentiert wurden.
