Das syntaktische Verhalten von Verben wird weitgehend durch ihre Bedeutung bestimmt. Problematisch fur diese These ist, dass Verben sich syntaktisch variabel verhalten; z.B. kommen alle intransitiven Verben mit Objekt vor (nod one’s approval, smile a happy smile). In dieser auf das Englische fokussierten Studie im Rahmen der generativen Grammatik werden Verben in Lexikon und Syntax klassifiziert. Darauf aufbauend werden Theorien des argument linking diskutiert. Erarbeitet wird ein an die Optimality Theory angelehntes Modell, das zur Analyse von Argument-Alternationen (Resultativ-Konstruktion, Kausativ-Alternation, Passiv) und Verbklassen (psych verbs, verbs of movement) herangezogen wird.
