Das Jubilaumsjahr 1999 gab Anlass, Leistungen der modernen Goethe-Philologie ebenso zu bilanzieren wie deren kunftige Aufgaben in den Blickpunkt zu rucken. Neben die kritische Diskussion der grossen Studienausgaben aus Frankfurt und Munchen trat die Orientierung auf eine grundlegende Erneuerung der Weimarer Ausgabe von Goethes Werken als eine der grossen Aufgaben der Germanistik. In diesem Konzept nimmt das Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv mit seinen Projekten (Inventarisierung von Goethes Nachlass, Regestausgabe der an Goethe gerichteten Briefe, Edition von Goethes Tagebuchern und Briefen) eine zentrale Stellung ein.
