Jim Reed lehrt seit 1961 als Germanist an der Universitat Oxford und wird am 30. September 2004 emeritiert. Die Festschrift versammelt Beitrage von Freunden und Schulern und ist in erster Linie Goethe, Heine, Nietzsche, Thomas Mann und Brecht gewidmet. Damit erfolgt eine Auseinandersetzung mit Themen und Forschungsansatzen, die Reed seit seinen ersten Buchpublikationen (Thomas Mann: The Uses of Tradition, 1974 und The Classical Centre: Goethe und Weimar, 1980) beschaftigt und fur die er in einer kurzlich erschienenen Aufsatzsammlung mit dem Stichwort Humanpraxis Literatur eine pragnante Charakterisierung gefunden hat.
