Ohne dass Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stets im Zentrum der Untersuchung stunde, bleiben sie doch alle auf ihn bezogen. Das Spektrum reicht von der Darlegung wesentlicher Voraussetzungen, die zur klassischen Blutezeit fuhrten, uber das Umfeld des Goetheschen Jugendwerks bis zur Epoche des West-oestlichen Divan . Ihr Ziel ist es, ausgehend von der philologischen Rekonstruktion und Interpretation zu groesseren geistesgeschichtlichen, motivgeschichtlichen oder lebensgeschichtlichen Zusammenhangen vorzudringen.
