This 1984 Munich habilitation thesis of was soon out of print and sought after. At that time, the work was announced in one sentence: Based on both old and new material, Savigny’s position in the idealistic context of his time and the consequences for his specific jurisprudence and policy will be followed extensively and with significant new results. This has since been recognized in many reviews and still applies. The topic has been elaborated and significantly enhanced in several subsequent Savigny studies by the author (Savignyana 9, 2011). This book presents a new and extended chronicle of Savigny’s life including texts and illustrations (see Savigny-Portraits, 2011 = Savignyana 11), a complete bibliography of sources and literature, revised and updated registers and an epilogue reflecting upon the location of this book in its scientific context.
