New Aramaic Turoyo used to be spoken in Tur Abdin in southeastern Turkey in around 40 villages, and in the city of Midyat. Today almost all speakers have left. Although the language has become relatively well known through the publications of Hellmut Ritter and Otto Jastrow, their works focus on the village dialects. This volume is dedicated to the divergent dialect of Midyat (Midyoyo). It includes texts from nine speakers recorded over a period of fifty years. Over the course of half a century Midyoyo has remained remarkably stable. The texts, which are reproduced in the form of transcripts and in a German translation, deal with a multitude of topics and provide a vivid impression of old Midyat and its specific linguistic form. In addition to texts on agriculture, local cuisine and manners and customs there are traditional narratives and hagiographies. The genocide of 1915 (Sayfo) committed against Anatolian Christians is also raised in a number of impressive testimonies. Following this volume, the authors plan to publish the results of their research in the form of a grammar and a glossary, in order to provide a complete account of Midyat’s dialect. German Description: Das neuaramaische Turoyo wurde im Turabdin in der sudostlichen Turkei in ca. 40 Dorfern und in der Stadt Midyat gesprochen. Heute sind fast alle Sprecher abgewandert. Die Sprache ist u.a. durch die Veroffentlichungen von Hellmut Ritter und Otto Jastrow vergleichsweise gut bekannt, doch stehen in diesen Werken die Dorfdialekte im Mittelpunkt. Der vorliegende Band ist dem abweichenden Dialekt der Stadt Midyat (Midyoyo) gewidmet. Er enthalt Texte von insgesamt neun Sprecherinnen und Sprechern, die uber einen Zeitraum von funfzig Jahren aufgenommen wurden. Im Verlauf dieses halben Jahrhunderts ist das Midyoyo bemerkenswert stabil geblieben. Die Texte, die in Transkription und deutscher Ubersetzung wiedergegeben sind, behandeln eine Vielzahl von Themen, die einen lebhaften Eindruck des alten Midyat und seiner spezifischen Sprachform vermitteln. Neben Texten zur Landwirtschaft, zur lokalen Kuche sowie zu Sitten und Gebrauchen stehen traditionelle Erzahlungen und Heiligenlegenden. Auch der an den anatolischen Christen verubte Volkermord des Jahres 1915 (Sayfo) kommt in eindrucklichen Zeugnissen zur Sprache. Die Autoren planen, im Anschluss an den vorliegenden Textband die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschung in Form einer Grammatik und eines Glossars zu veroffentlichen und damit eine umfassende Darstellung des Dialekts von Midyat vorzulegen.
