English summary: As a consequence of the Reformation, the professors at Protestant universities held marriage as a new and ideal arrival, and by embracing it they strove to present the professoriate as a confessional group. At the same time, the involvement of families in public university celebrations also helped them to establish their academic position as a socially privileged and exclusive one. In the Age of the Enlightenment, however, a new image of the academic developed, for which the rediscovered idea of the single academic was again a central concept. The Scholar in the House investigates the dynamic relationship between university and family life with regards to the functions which they both fulfilled, using the University of Helmstedt as an example. Therefore, the thesis presented in this work states that the subjects of marriage, family, and household were central to how university professors saw themselves and others. This book offers a deep insight into the domestic arrangements, the social interaction with marriage and sexuality as well as the issue of self-representation in text and image. In addition to the archival collection of the University of Helmstedt, this study also examines funeral sermons, burial programs, and advice-literature. The study this contours the interactions between with the family as an expression of a scholarly way of life and establishes at the same time new perspectives on the history of academic scholarship. German description: Infolge der Reformation hielt fur die Professoren an den protestantischen Universitaten die Ehe als neues Ideal Einzug - auf diese Weise prasentierten sich die Hochschullehrer als konfessionstreue Gruppe. Die Beteiligung der Familie an offentlichen Universitatsfeiern half ihnen dabei zugleich, sich als privilegierter und exklusiver Stand zu etablieren. Im Aufklarungszeitalter trat dann an die Stelle dieses Selbstentwurfs ein neues Gelehrtenbild, zu dem vor allem die wiederentdeckte Leitidee des allein lebenden Professors gehorte.Der Gelehrte im Haus untersucht am Beispiel der Universitat Helmstedt das dynamische Verhaltnis von Universitat und Familienleben im Hinblick auf die Funktionen, die es fur die Professorenschaft erfullte. Dabei wird die These verfolgt, dass die Themenbereiche Ehe, Familie und Haushalt zentral fur das Selbst- und Fremdverstandnis der Universitatsprofessoren waren. Das Buch bietet dabei einen tiefen Einblick in die hausliche Ordnung, den Umgang mit Ehe und Sexualitat sowie die Selbstdarstellung in Text und Bild. Ausgewertet wurden neben dem archivalischen Bestand der Universitat Helmstedt auch Leichenpredigten, Bestattungsprogramme und Ratgeberliteratur. Die Studie konturiert so den Umgang mit der Familie als Ausdruck von gelehrten Lebensweisen und eroffnet damit zugleich eine neue Perspektive auf die Wissenschaftsgeschichte.
