The publication documents conference contributions to the research project on the archival transmission of military art protection during the Second World War, the main source of which is the estate of Count Franziskus Wolff Metternich (1893-1978). Wolff Metternich was a long-time Rhenish provincial and state curator as well as the commissioner for art protection during World War II. In addition to a historical and international legal contextualization of the topic, based on art protection in France with sub-areas and partner institutions for archive and library protection, there is also the overall structure of art protection organizations in the occupied territories of Europe in focus. Case studies on the Rhineland also explain the regional level of cultural property protection. Current developments in the protection of cultural assets (on the part of the preservation of monuments, museum organizations or in the military) illustrate the explosive nature of the topic and the need for international and transdisciplinary networking and processing of research desiderata.
