-A Symposium was held at the University of Melbourne in 1988 to commemorate Australia’s Bicentenary at which eminent scholars from Germany and Australia were in attendance. Their contributions embrace two hundred years of German literary history from the French Revolution to the post-modern period of the present day. The notion of history is the starting point for their deliberations. Traditional authors such as Goethe, Schiller, Jean Paul, Kleist, Fontane, Thomas Mann and Feuchtwanger are treated alongside the work and the reception of German speaking writers, both past and present, in Australia.
Contributors: Dieter Borchmeyer, Brian Coghlan, Hiltrud Gnug, Christian Grawe, Uwe Japp, Manfred Jurgensen, Hans Joachim Kreutzer, John Milfull, Norberts Oellers, Gunter Oesterle, David Roberts, Gerhard Sauder, Hans-Jurgen Schings, Margaret Stoljar, Gero von Wilpert.-
