The coloured circular view of the Nuremberg letter painter Niclas Meldeman with the depiction of the first siege of Vienna by the Ottomans in 1529 is one of the zimelies of the Vienna Museum. Funded by the Nuremberg City Council, Meldeman was able to develop a six-woodblock view in a few months, which is an event picture as well as commentary on current events. This commercial product quickly became widely available, but is currently only available in three complete specimens, one fragmentary and some lost but detectable specimens. The interdisciplinary conference volume explores the source value of the pictorial work, places it in the context of contemporary cartography and critically questions the significance of Vienna for the Ottomans.
