Der Dativ im Deutschen ist ein in seiner Vielseitigkeit schlecht verstandenes Feld. Die vorliegende Studie entwickelt die erste einheitliche und gleichzeitig formal explizite Theorie der freien Dative des Deutschen. Kernaussage ist, dass jeder freie Dativ als Antezedens einer Reflexivdiathese fungiert. Traditionelle Dativtypen, die dieser Analyse zuganglich sind, umfassen den possessiven Dativ, den dativus (in)commodi und den dativus iudicantis.
