Die elf Kapitel widmen sich jeweils einem Bereich der Phonologie; z. B. den phonetischen Grundlagen, distinktiven Merkmalen, der autosegmentalen Phonologie, Silbenphonologie, prosodischen Phonologie und der Optimalitatstheorie. Jedes Kapitel enthalt zur Vertiefung eine Reihe von Aufgaben.
