Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) is one of the most important and widely read German writers of the 20th century. There is an enormous amount of critical and theoretical secondary literature on him, and this volume provides the first complete up-to-date bibliography of these writings. The bibliography includes some 25,000 titles of German and international secondary literature and classifies them systematically under headings such as biography, individual works, letters, processes of reception at home and abroad etc. The bibliography aims for completeness and is superior to earlier works both in the number of entries and the relevance of the titles included. Thus it represents the most comprehensive reference work on more than 100 years of research and reception.
The bibliography also contains a partial commentary in that besides providing tables of contents of monographs and collected volumes it also furnishes information for many titles on reviews, press commentaries etc. This makes the bibliography an indispensable research tool for Hesse studies which gives every scholar and interested reader of Hesse’s works rapid and focussed access to all the secondary literature on the life and work of this great writer.
