Der Aufsatzband benennt mit Christologie, Kosmographie und Diatribe drei wichtige Themen der fruhen Kirche , d. h. der Reichskirche, wie sie nach Nikaia (Nicaa 325) entstanden ist. Kritisch gepruft werden die in Chalkedon (451) vollzogene Rezeption von zwei christologischen Sichtweisen, ferner die Rezeption Chalkedons vom 6. bis 7. Jh. und die historische Kontinuitat zum Monergismus und Monotheletismus. Im Blick auf antike Denkmuster hebt der Autor Probleme theologischer Sprache (von Eunomios v. Kyzikos bis Anastasios Sinaites), die Methode topischer Findung christologischer Axiomatik und das anthropologische Paradigma der hypostatischen Union hervor. In der Kosmographie stellt Kosmas der Indienfahrer (6. Jh.) dem ptolemaischen Weltbild ein biblisches Weltbild antiochenischer Provenienz entgegen. Schliesslich werden der Predigtstil der Diatribe, entwickelt aus einer Kommunikationsform der Schule und des Marktes, und das Ende spatantiker Rhetorik bei Augustinus reflektiert.
