Der Band versammelt Beitrage ausgewiesener Kunsthistoriker zum beruhmten Marienportal der Kathedrale Notre-Dame von Lausanne (erste Halfte des 13. Jhs.). Aus verschiedenen Perspektiven werden die Entstehung, das ikonographische Programm, die geistesgeschichtliche Bedeutung sowie die Stellung des Portals im Kontext der europaischen Gotik, z. B. der gotischen Sakralarchitektur Englands und Nordfrankreichs, untersucht. So entsteht ein detailliertes Gesamtbild der ‘Porta picta’ von Lausanne als eines bedeutenden mittelalterlichen Kunstdenkmals.
