Il volume, diviso in due parti, analizza in che modo due miti classici impostati sull'incesto - quello di Fedra e quello di Edipo - vengono ripresi, rielaborati e trasformati nella letteratura teatrale francese del Seicento. Accanto a problemi letterari e teatrali che emergono da questo insieme di analisi, l'elemento ideologicamente dominante e l'inserimento del discorso religioso cristiano sulla tematica mitica: la cristianizzazione del mito, dunque, che serve a modernizzarlo. E proprio in questo senso che anche i due testi centrali, la Phedre di Racine e l'OEdipe di Corneille, vengono riletti e riproposti ai lettori di oggi.
