Jesus of Nazareth portrayed his death as a sacrifice willed by the God of Israel, and instructed his disciples to symbolically drink his blood and partake of his flesh. In so doing, though, he seems to have unequivocally and deliberately set the stage for a profound spiritual crisis to arise in the lives of his Jewish followers, for whom human sacrifice and the eating of blood were anathema.

Jesus versus YHWH explores the scriptural implications of these teachings to show that Jesus was in no way seeking to establish a new religious covenant. Rather, author Peter Gillies proposes that by assuming the role of a sacrificial offering within the context of Judaism, Jesus was seeking to provoke the utter abrogation of the everlasting covenant that bound the Chosen People to their tribal God - giving his life that his followers might go free.
