En 1755, pour echapper a la deportation, plusieurs familles acadiennes de la butte a Petard, maintenant Saint-Joseph-de-Memramcook, au Nouveau-Brunswick, se refugient dans les bois a l'arrivee des troupes anglaises.
C'est ainsi que deux jeunes, Premelia et Fidele, brusquement separes de leur pere et de leur mere, se retrouvent en foret avec leur grand-pere que l'on surnomme Petard. Leur fuite, qu'ils croyaient temporaire, se transforme en un eprouvant exil qui durera huit ans. La presence de la veuve Rosalie et l'aide precieuse du Mi'kmaq Kitpou ne parviendront pas toujours a soulager leurs peines.
