This study contests received ideas about the roles accorded to women in Stendhal’s fiction. Mina de Vanghel, Vanina Vanini, Mathilde de La Mole, and Lamiel, often disdained by critics, are revalorised here in their capacity as autonomous heroines, in control of their destiny.
