Annales Islamologiques 48 is published in two fascicles. AnIsl 48.1, Le corps dans l'espace islamique medieval, is edited by Pauline Koetschet and Abbes Zouache. The introduction and fourteen articles that make up the fascicle provide a broad overview of ‘the body’ in the medieval Islamic world. The body has increasingly become a field of study in its own right, as historians begin to realize the need for discussion and collaboration with specialists in other disciplines. The articles in the fascicle lay out foundations for a field of research which is still largely uncharted. Notions of the body in the medieval Islamic world make up a puzzle whose pieces are just beginning to be pieced together, and which can only be accomplished through a range of methodological approaches. This fascicle has been produced with a view towards showing the body to be a key part of social and representational history. To achieve this, its authors have drawn on disciplines including history, philosophy, literature, anthropology, and art history. From this, the body has become a trail of breadcrumbs which leads to the fuller understanding of societies whose mechanisms have been long forgotten.
