This book presents the proceedings of the conference ‘Groupes sociaux et territoires urbains (Moyen Age-16e siecle)’ organized in December 2004 at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. This book offers twelve original contributions on social dynamics of urban space in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. The first part of this book describes the long-term structuring of the urban area by the occupation strategies of the dominant groups: canonical chapters, feudal magistrates and guilds (Tours, Namur, Trevise). The second part considers the urban society in its relations with horizons further afield. The articles published here reveal, often in a new light, not only the unusual history of the cities in question but more fundamentally the processes and influences at work in the permanent development and redevelopment of the urban spaces. French text.
