Cathy is a shy and academically gifted mixed-race teenager who struggles with intrusive voices and visual hallucinations.
Everything Cathy knows changes when her family relocates, and she is removed from anything and everyone she knows to be home. She must navigate her issues in a new country and school with new people and social cues. Cathy struggles to find her way in a city where kids aren't friendly. She can't count the times she's been teased for her "weird" outfits and told she's not "really" black. But that's not all that changes. Her once lively mum, Elsie, is depressed and quiet. Her dad, Tacari, comes home after dark and always fights.
As family problems spiral out of control, so does Cathy's mind. She fights a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality and delusion, with a head plagued by voices. She isolates herself and creates a wall between herself and her feuding parents. Cathy's dad disappears and, with him, all comfort.
It might be easier to end it all now. Or stay a little longer, find her dad, bring him back to her. Or maybe there's a third way Cathy can't see yet.
