This book reexamines the cliche of a W. G. Sebald without pathos by showing the conflict between indifference and empathy. The use of documents and images is reevaluated from the unprecedented perspective of an economy of pathos, which can also be observed in the subtle motifs of the gesture, of cinema, of theater, and of opera.
