Jacob Balde is a famous Jesuit father in the Counter-Reformation period. His Tragedy Jephtias was performed in 1637, printed in 1654. It deals with a story borrowed from Judges XI, and is a beautiful example of Humanist scholarship, and an expression of Roman Catholic figurative exegesis.
