This study aims to gain an understanding of a key figure in the imaginary of nineteenth century France, a model of state authority, secularized but tyrannical, in his historical and symbolic coherence. It also seeks to clarify the profound issues surrounding the figure who gave rise at the time to a veritable Richelieumania.
