Trois ans plus tard, il publiera Le Calvaire qui suscitera un enorme scandale.

Ecrit a la premiere personne, ce roman-confession est, sous le nom de Jean Mintie, le recit de ses propres turpitudes. C'est un acte d'expiation, mais aussi un acte de liberation.

l'Amour barbouille de sang, ivre de fange, l'Amour aux fureurs onaniques, l'amour maudit, qui colle sur l'homme sa gueule en forme de ventouse, et lui desseche les veines, lui pompe les moelles, lui decharne les os.
