Jacques Cartier est un navigateur, explorateur francais et ecrivain par ses recits de voyage. Ne en 1491 a Saint-Malo, il y meurt le 1er septembre 1557. Mandate par le roi de France Francois Ier, il aborde en 1534 le golfe du Saint-Laurent et explore le territoire alentour qu'il nomme Canada. Auteur de cartes, Cartier, par ses Relations, est le premier Europeen a decrire et nommer ces eaux, leurs rives et leurs habitants. Il effectue un second voyage en 1535-1536 et un troisieme en 1541-1542. Emile Chevalier lui consacre avec cet ouvrage une magistrale biographie, et l'une des premieres editees.
