Roman a cle anonyme publie a Paris en 1887, un an apres la tragedie du lac de Starnberg, le Roman d'un roi met en scene la fiction des troublantes amours du roi Louis II de Baviere, travesti en Luitgard de Neubourg. L'education sexuelle du jeune roi Luitgard connait, lors de l'exposition universelle de 1867, deux rates spectaculaires avec des femmes expertes en seduction et fort peu farouches. Si, dans la suite du recit, Luitgard rencontre le grand amour, il restera pourtant vierge, porteur d'un lourd secret qui ne sera jamais devoile. Le Roi vierge s'isole du monde et sombre dans la folie. Une commission medicale proclame l'incapacite de regner et ordonne l'internement du roi dans son propre chateau. Alors qu'il cherche a fuir, il finit par etre assassine.
