Coming of age during the tumultuous 1960s in apartheid South Africa demands more than courage Rianna Vermeulen has to navigate the consequences of breaking racial segregation laws when she immerses herself in banned books and then develops feelings for a young man across the colour line. It’s not easy doing the right thing when the prime minister is assassinated and your best friend accuses you of treason. Decades later, still haunted by her lost love, Rianna returns to South Africa in a bold attempt to discover the truth of what happened to him. She becomes caught up in a deadly cat-and-mouse game as the distinction between friend and foe blurs. About the Author Danie Botha was born in Zambia and completed his school education and medical training in South Africa. He has called Canada home for the past 22 years and is still learning to speak proper Canadian. (It’s similar to English.) He has published three novels, a novella, and a poetry collection. If he is not at the hospital or busy writing, he can be found cycling, land paddling or kayaking, and cross-country skiing in winter (if it’s not too bitterly cold.)
Interview with the Author Q - What makes the Be Silent/Be Bold series unique? A - Several things. It is a mini-series, but the books can be read as stand-alone novels. Be Good (a novella), is the prequel to the novel Be Silent. The third and final book in this series is Be Bold. I wanted to create novels that reflect and paint images of the places and people I grew up with, in Africa, or came in contact with or read about but never had the opportunity to meet. (Although keep in mind-the stories are all fictional.) In fiction, I read and enjoy different genres-from literary to contemporary to historical fiction. What best describes this series is a 20th-century historical action-adventure. Be Good, Be Silent, and Be Bold are indeed mixtures of many genres, which bring homage to the complex nature of the emancipation of the Southern African region and its peoples, following centuries of colonialization, ethnic conflict, and political turmoil. Q - Is there any particular order to read the books? A - The official order is Be Good, Be Silent, and Be Bold. I first wrote Be Silent, then Be Good (a novella), with Be Bold as the conclusion to the mini-series.
Q - Why should readers bother with this mini-series? A - Readers who enjoy more modern (contemporary) historical fiction, interspersed with immersion into the 1950s and 1960s Southern Africa, spiced with multiculturalism, political turmoil, and fast-paced action, will enjoy these African adventures.
