Introducing twenty-three-year-old Declan Tucker: an awkward, insecure, socially inept misfit who has convinced himself he is one of the world's greatest artists. After one hundred and forty-seven design firms reject his job application, he is determined to prove them all wrong. Declan decides to follow in the footsteps of his hero Claude Monet and travels to Paris to realize his destiny as a great artist, armed with nothing but his dreams and a new credit card.

In Paris, Declan experiences universal rejection, homelessness, arrest, and the irritating presence of an ill-mannered ghost who steals his underwear and his food. His dreams of fame and success grow dim, and he is losing his ever-tenuous grip on reality. He ends up homeless and takes shelter in a broken-down squat with other destitute people. It's in that squat that he finds something better than fame; he finds a place where he belongs in a community of like-minded, art-loving misfits. When fame arrives suddenly and unexpectedly, Declan must choose between the new community he loves and the success he set out to achieve.
