Virginia is a very young Flying Squirrel who is special because she has pure white fur. The family has moved to the Flying Squirrel Sanctuary to escape the bullying she had to endure, and which left her in tears every day. This has proven a wise move immediately and her happiness is a thrill for her parents and brother. Then she disappears!

The call for help comes through the forest one morning, and Shelby rushes to their nest tree to help. Along with him are more forest friends, all wanting to help. They assemble teams and scour the forest to no avail. Then they meet Nikita. When she hears of this terrible dilemma, she volunteers her particular skills and soon finds a scent which leads to the road.

The animals set up patrols to watch for any vehicle that stops and lets a person out to walk into the forest. Not long after, a small van stops by the road and out hops a young man.

Nikita detects the same smells in this person's footsteps, and with the owls as flying taxis, Shelby, Marvin, Peter, and others follow the van to a small building in the nearest town.

Meanwhile, inside the building, Virginia has befriended a baby raccoon in the cage next to hers, named Bandit. She learns how to open her cage and to let him out too. She hatches a plan for escape. At the same time Nikita's sleuthing has paid off - when the van parks the owls fly to the window sills and soon see Virginia inside, her white fur glowing like a beacon. She opens her cage and Shelby tries to explain through the glass what is going to happen to rescue her.

Nikita pleads with Bryan, her owner, with actions and barking, to get in the car and drive them. Following the owls who now retrace the route, off they go.

There is much more that happens, Virginia triggers an alarm while exploring her options in the hallway.

The rescue is pulled off smoothly, the alarm goes off the same way. Virginia has learned that the panic bar on the door opens it when she flies from the other end of the hall to push on it with all her weight. She and Bandit scurry out just as the alarms start screaming and lights flash all around them. As Bryan's car leaves a huge fire truck screeches into the parking lot.

There is much more to the story: Flying Squirrel babies, emotional litter reunion for Nikita, and a fabulous Canine Lacrosse Tournament with everyone there watching, including Lavonne and Alvin, the lab workers who had been assigned to check their little captives for their health and well-being, who took centre stage to announce that no more animals will be captured. Instead they will be patrolling daily to make sure all is well, and only if there is an injury needing treatment will they ever take one of the animals away again.
