Five-year-old Joey is learning all about the world with the help of his nine-year-old sister Marley. What he learns is war, for it is the spring of 1944 and America is in its third full year of World War II. Even the comedies and musicals at the picture show end with a newsreel showing the battles being fought overseas. They come home and act out what they see at the show.

But not all of Joey’s battles are make-believe. He is constantly at odds with his brother, who is in conflict with their father. By accident, Joey is drawn into that conflict too.

When Joey and Marley uncover something that could cause a family crisis, they decide that only they can stop it. Marley comes up with a daring plan for children their age, but will it work?

This is a lively told story about a family’s love for each other in spite of their quarrels. It shows how even the shadow of war cannot dampen the hijinks, wonder, and imagination of children.
