Mitchell Adams returns to counsel a healthy 42-year-old client, with no history of depression or psychosis, who believes he has a moral imperative to be alone the rest of his life. His parents died early, as did the aunt who took him in, along with his two wives and various girlfriends. Mitch calls it bad luck and urges Ash to date again when he's ready. Ash has special abilities that he keeps to himself. Sometimes, he can relive past events in his sleep. By touching flesh, he can transport himself into others' lives or their relatives' pasts.
Mitch and his finance Claire Kelly, a rising local singer, are building a new home together. Early on, Ash follows Mitch and becomes smitten with Claire, and later stalks them both.
Ash's baggage is his Hungarian family history, which contains a large gypsy contingent. He believes in curses and thinks two old women from a daguerreotype picture in his family album have come to life to kill him and, in his dreams, they chase him inside the picture. Scared, he tells Mitch, who thinks Ash is having a psychotic episode. Before Ash runs from the office, he alludes to being in a 'looney bin' before, and he plans to claim Claire as his girlfriend and that no one should try to stop him.
What follows is an extreme case of stalking and a rapid descent into madness for a tortured soul, or is it?
