Elissa’s Family Journey

Elissa, the star of previous Elissa Discovers books, returns to learn about immigration and what it means to her family-all immigrants or children of immigrants.

When Elissa finds Grandmother crying happy tears over a poetry book by fellow immigrant Khalil Gibran, Grandmother explains how moving it is to feel completely understood by someone else's words. Elissa asks what an immigrant is, and Grandmother explains, then brings out her old brown suitcase filled with letters, photos, and postcards from family members living all over the world.

Elissa wishes she could meet her extended family, and Grandmother is thrilled to tell her that she can-and soon: they're coming for a family reunion! Delighted, Elissa writes a poem about immigration to share at dinner.
