With the farm saved once again, Cole Pecker thinks that he can get back to the business of preparing for harvest. Jesse Langland was Cole's first consensual sexual encounter-a one-night stand on a road trip to California. When Jesse arrives at the Pecker Farm fired from her teaching position and very much pregnant, Cole must put aside his childlike ways and attempt to be the man of the house. Running a farm is easy enough for Cole, but being a parent was not in his plans.

Cole's older brother and sister attempt to shield Cole from his responsibilities. Jesse claims that she needs nothing from Cole but a place to stay until she gets back on her feet.

Cole wants to be a good man and do the right thing. For Cole, that means a burgundy suit and an emerald ring.
