A ceremonial magician, author, occultist, and novelist from Britain, Dion Fortune also wrote novels. She supposedly received her teachings from ethereal beings called the Ascended Masters, and she helped found the occult Fraternity of the Inner Light to spread their teachings. Her occult beliefs were the subject of numerous articles and books, and she wrote seven novels, some of which delve into occult themes. Despite her illustrious English family's wealth, little is known about Fortune's childhood. She was born in Llandudno, Caernarfonshire, North Wales. She had already written two poetry collections while residing in the English West Country by the time she was a teenager. Following her time at a horticultural college, she attended the University of London to study psychology and psychoanalysis. Afterward, she worked as a counselor at a psychotherapy clinic. She started a business selling soy milk products and was a member of the Women's Land Army during WWI. The esoteric teachings of the Theosophical Society piqued her interest in the subject, and she eventually joined an occult lodge run by Theodore Moriarty and the Alpha et Omega group.
