Lucas Harper - Having finally been selected as a journeyman mage, Lucas looks forward to learning new things as he masters his magical gift. But fate is to deal him a different hand from the one he had envisioned. Lucas is struggling to master two disciplines: geomancy, and the relatively unknown gift of verdumancy. Add to that, he now has a special relationship with the woodland fey.

Sholeena Blorlafargalish - Sholeena hails from a tribe of people called the Paludaria, marsh dwellers of Indigo Bay. Her race is semi-aquatic, having webbed feet. Her skin can change color to reflect her mood or reflexively camouflage her when frightened. Her homunculus, Filbert, is a little fish that swims in the back of her thoughts and gives her wise advice. Though sometimes timid she would dare much for those she calls her friends.

Royland Wagge - Although technically not a narrator in this novel, Royland is present throughout its pages and is quite instrumental in pursuing its quest. He considers Lucas his cousin. Sometimes grumpy and always quirky, Roy has many fine qualities and is trying to improve his social skills.

Join the merriment as three new journeymen rise to the challenge of a dire quest into the Black Plagued Marshes. It is a journey fraught with many perils but also one of self-discovery.
