The new Haus order has been imposed by Maxximillian who is also known by those who love him as Christian Axel. The Russian Guard leadership is adjusting to the rise of the Mortar King. The replacements for exiled black collars are learning their new positions. The Fur King, who financed the Mortar King's revolution within the Haus, is on his deathbed. He sends multiple messages to Christian Axel to attend him.
Claus, the Fur King, tells Christian Axel the story of the Haus. The Haus in 1974 had been formed more than two hundred years earlier as an exclusive Haus for the entertainment of the powerful and the rich. Claus introduces the story upon his arrival as a social refugee in the early 1900s.
The description and history of the Haus, along with the leadership that rises and dies there by Claus, is of little interest to Christian Axel. When Claus finally starts to tell the story of the beginning of Christian Axel, the Mortar King rebels and believes the verbal history given by Claus is a lie.
Is it a lie? The reader will have to decide whether Claus is telling it as it really happened or whether Christian's denials are more likely to be true.
