This story is about my relationship with my pet Yorkshire Terrier named Moose, a story that explores a relationship which began with our acquisition of Moose when he was eight weeks old, and continued for the following 13 years, years that turned into an adventure with an intelligent and loving pet, resulting in a remarkable bond of affection. We explore Moose's habits, routines, and experiences which become windows through which the reader can see clearly the character of this remarkable companion and the quality of the relationship between us that continued to build throughout his life. Even Moose's death became a dramatic expression of his affection for me, a description of which inspires beyond tears. Moreover, it compelled me to reflect more seriously upon the issue of whether our pet companions share in the immortality that we human beings desire and expect and how we think and talk about that in ways that make sense and give meaning to our lives.
It is my hope that readers of My Love Affair with a Dog Named Moose will be encouraged in developing a more meaningful relationship with their pet animals in such a way that they are better able to work through the grief process that follows their loss, even to the point of experiencing the therapeutic value of writing about the experience.
Love affairs are not always positive and life-giving but this story is one that meets both expectations!
