Polly Stearns, owner of a mail order bride agency, has kept secrets in her heart for twenty-seven years. She has a son, JD Stearns, whom she has never seen. His birth father is the notorious outlaw, Alex Johns. Under dire circumstances, Polly's brother raised JD as his own child. JD is a Territorial Marshal based in Spur, Texas. He thinks Polly is only an aunt whom he's never met, and believes his papa is Sheriff James Daniel Stearns. It is a tangled web of misinformation. Polly must share the truth to keep JD from the burden of being the one who has to shoot Alex Johns in the line of duty.

Polly's son, the territorial marshal, and Texas Ranger Grey Byrd have ridden together for years and are closer than friends. Grey and his brothers own Byrd Ranch where Marshal JD is treated like family. JD and Grey are hunting the killers, Alex Johns gang.

When Polly's stagecoach is held up on the tall grass prairie by Alex's gang, she inadvertently leads the outlaw, Ed Schmidt, to Byrd Ranch and puts everyone in danger. Ed turns out to be the key to finding Alex John's gang.
