The New York City Police Department had its origin in trying to find a better way

to control the rising crime rate as early as the mid-19th century.

As you begin reading, you will understand how the crime, in the city that never

sleeps was brought on by the massive population growth which caused primarily

by poor Irish immigrants from Ireland beginning in the 1820s.

You will learn how New York City implemented the London, England policing

model of a full-time professional police force in 1845. This was done with the

establishment of the Municipal Police, replacing the inadequate, outdated night

watch system which had been in place since the 17th century with the founding of

the Dutch colonial city of New Amsterdam.

The Municipal Police were impatiently replaced by a Metropolitan Police.

Other local police were consolidated.

As you keep reading, you will be amazed how I took you to the past and back to

the present time. It was not easy collecting stories about this great second-to-none

organization, but it was not impossible.
